From Oncologist to App Developer: A Passion for Cars Drives an Unlikely Career Shift

After two decades as a radiation oncologist, Emmanuel Beguier’s lifelong passion for cars drove him to leave medicine behind and create Carfooly, a studio developing apps and games for automotive enthusiasts.

After two decades as a radiation oncologist, Emmanuel Beguier’s lifelong passion for cars drove him to leave medicine behind and create Carfooly, a studio developing apps and games for automotive enthusiasts.

A successful career in medicine is often considered a safe and well-respected path, but for one man, the pull of a lifelong passion led him to a completely different world: the automotive industry. From radiation oncologist to founder of Carfooly, a studio dedicated to creating applications and games for car enthusiasts, Emmanuel’s journey is a remarkable tale of transformation.

“I started my career as a radiation oncologist. I practiced for about twenty years and developed a private cancer institute in Montpellier,” he recalls. His medical career was rewarding and impactful, but after two decades, the allure of something different became irresistible. “I stopped practicing medicine to focus on other projects, including Carfooly, a studio that publishes and develops applications and games dedicated to car enthusiasts.”

A Lifelong Passion for Cars

Emmanuel’s shift from medicine to the automotive world was deeply rooted in a lifelong fascination with cars. “Cars have always fascinated me,” he explains. “As a teenager, I was passionate about Porsche, and I never missed an issue of Flat6 magazine. Today, it’s more about Ferrari.” But his interest extends beyond just the cars. “It’s not just the cars, but the world of collecting, luxury, and passion that surrounds them,” he adds. “I wanted to create something new for enthusiasts—an environment where they could share, interact, and play around their love for cars, extending this passion through unique experiences.”

This fascination with cars wasn’t something new. “I’ve always loved beautiful cars, prestigious brands, and the evolving technologies in this field. Long before car spotting became a trend, I would visit places where I could admire sports cars, especially near large hotels. Before the internet, I bought every magazine dedicated to beautiful cars. I knew the specifications of every car by heart.” His love for cars had always been a constant, even before he found his way into entrepreneurship.

Transitioning from Medicine to Entrepreneurship

The shift from a stable career in healthcare to a startup in the tech world wasn’t without its challenges. “The biggest challenge was adapting to a new environment,” Emmanuel admits. “As a doctor and healthcare business owner, I already had management and decision-making skills. However, the entrepreneurial world in the automotive and tech industries is very different.”

Despite the steep learning curve, his medical background provided a solid foundation. “Creating a startup in this field requires an innovative approach and a deep understanding of the industry,” Emmanuel explains. “But the adventure is exciting and rewarding every day.” Learning digital communication, social media, and the world of developers was an essential part of the process. “It was crucial for me to learn the world of developers,” he says. “But that was part of the excitement—adapting to this new space while pursuing something I truly loved.”

Carfooly: Turning Passion into Profession

In his spare time, Emmanuel always consumed content about cars on social media. “I noticed there was a lack of platforms that combine community and interactivity,” he explains. “That’s when I decided to develop apps and games to offer an innovative way for people to live and share their passion for cars.” This led to the creation of Carfooly, a studio focused on creating unique experiences for car enthusiasts.

Carfooly’s main projects include The Club and Need for Touring. “The Club is an app that allows you to spot and collect the most beautiful cars, share discoveries, and interact with a community of enthusiasts,” he explains. “Need for Touring is an accessible game for everyone, where each race is a strategic challenge. Players use the right cards at the right time to attack, defend, and cross the finish line first, all while collecting a multitude of items.”

The unique aspect of Carfooly’s projects lies in their design. “They’re made by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts,” he says proudly. “We’re also very proud to have GMK as our ambassador.”

Partnership with Top Marques

As Carfooly grows, the importance of reaching the right audience becomes clear. “Top Marques is the perfect event to reach our audience,” Emmanuel says. “It was a no-brainer for us to be there. It also allows us to meet strategic partners and continue growing our projects. The event is truly magnificent, and the team is top-notch!”

Surrounded by iconic cars at Top Marques, he reflects on the magic of the event. “Being at Top Marques, surrounded by all these fascinating cars, is magical!”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Having made his own leap into the world of entrepreneurship, Emmanuel shares valuable advice for those looking to follow a similar path. “Surround yourself with the right people, be curious, and learn constantly,” he says. “Entrepreneurship is about turning your passion into a concrete project, facing challenges every day, and watching your ideas come to life.”

He emphasizes the importance of taking that first step. “It’s about taking the leap, just as I did. Don’t be afraid to follow your passion and take the first step.”

BRABUS X TOP MARQUES MONACO

Top Marques Monaco is a unique celebration of innovation, exclusivity, and craftsmanship, where the world’s most prestigious brands – like BRABUS – gather to showcase their latest products. BRABUS has been part of this iconic event since its inaugural edition in 2004. Here, Tom Schneider reflects on some of the key milestones from BRABUS’ remarkable journey with Top Marques.

For nearly two decades, BRABUS has been proud to be a part of Top Marques Monaco. From the early years of the event to the present day, our brand has used this prestigious platform to present the latest luxury products from all facets of the world of BRABUS. Bespoke high-performance supercars, luxury dayboats, motorcycles with an instant 1-Second-Wow effect and expertly restored Mercedes-Benz classics. Together with Top Marques, we have been able to connect the industry’s most passionate and influential clients with the BRABUS DNA and introduce them to our vision of tailor-made automotive individualization.

Not just supercars but superboats

A significant milestone in our journey with Top Marques came in 2019 when BRABUS Marine made its official debut at the show in Monaco with a display of the BRABUS Shadow 500 BLACK OPS superboat. Boasting a limited edition “Black and Bold” design concept as well as a combined power output of 500 horsepower produced courtesy of twin 4.6-liter Mercury Marine V8 ProXS lightweight FourStroke engines, this unmistakable marine Masterpiece captivated audiences and took our product showcase at Grimaldi Forum to an entirely new level.

Another landmark moment arrived in 2022. Among a fresh lineup of exclusive luxury products, two highlight supercars took center stage at the BRABUS booth: the BRABUS 820, based on the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, and the BRABUS 700, based on the Rolls-Royce Ghost II. For the first time in history, visitors to our showcase were brought face to face with new horizons of tailor-made Masterpiece design by BRABUS, beyond the technological platforms provided by Mercedes-Benz, AMG and Maybach, which fans of the brand were already very familiar with. For the first time since our earliest appearance at the show in the mid-2000s, we introduced an all-new benchmark. One that would set the tone of our presence in Monaco for several years to come.

A relationship built on shared values: exclusivity, excellence and commitment to deliver

Our longstanding relationship with Top Marques is built on shared values: exclusivity, excellence and a commitment to deliver unforgettable luxury experiences spanning several market segments. But what truly makes the show such an effective asset for us is the perfect synergy between our brand and the event’s audience. Year after year, Top Marques attracts discerning collectors, automotive enthusiasts and industry professionals—a global, elite clientele in search of the performance and detail-driven craftsmanship that define BRABUS.

“Top Marques Monaco is the perfect stage for us as a diversified luxury mobility brand to showcase our latest products.” Explains BRABUS CEO and owner Constantin Buschmann. “There really isn’t any other show in Europe like it that brings together such an exclusive audience of enthusiasts who appreciate high-performance luxury and engineering at the highest level.” Buschmann continues, “You can see the entire city jump to life. Car spotters, supercars, bikes, boats, fashion—for almost 20 years, it’s all come together at Grimaldi Forum.”

Top Marques is an invaluable medium for BRABUS

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Top Marques Monaco, we look forward to the future with excitement. The event continues to be an invaluable medium for BRABUS to unveil new innovations, push the limits of automotive and marine luxury and connect with high-performance enthusiasts who share our passion for the extraordinary. Our journey with Top Marques is far from over, and we are more committed than ever to creating exceptional shows in Monaco—both on the road and beyond.

Top Marques Monaco: The Renaissance of Classic Cars in the Heart of Luxury

Once a showcase for the latest in high-performance vehicles, Top Marques Monaco has embraced the allure of the past with its growing Classic Cars section.

Since its inception in 2004, Top Marques Monaco has carved out a reputation as one of the world’s premier luxury supercar events, consistently showcasing cutting-edge technology, high-performance vehicles, and the most sophisticated designs from the automotive world. But in recent years, Top Marques has expanded its horizons, bringing a breath of fresh air and new energy to the luxury automobile world with the introduction of a Classic Cars department.

A New Era for Classic Cars at Top Marques

After a successful debut in 2019 under the management of Monaco Check-In, the idea of a dedicated Classic Cars section took root. And in 2022, this concept became a reality. For the first time, a new 3,000m² area was added to the event, specifically for the display and sale of classic cars. This section quickly became a popular attraction where nostalgia and luxury met, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of automotive history.

What was once a show entirely focused on the future of high-performance vehicles, now gracefully embraces the allure of the past. This new venture created a warm ambiance that felt different from the usual high-octane thrill of supercars. It was no longer just about futuristic technology and speed—it became about timeless beauty, history, and a collective passion for cars that transcend generations.

The Passion Behind Classic Cars

At the heart of the Classic Cars department is a celebration of cars that have shaped the automobile world over decades. For many, these vehicles are more than just machines—they are a symbol of craftsmanship, design, and history. Visitors are not just on the lookout for their next investment, but to meet fellow enthusiasts who share their love for iconic vehicles. The classic car world has long had a devoted fanbase, but now, thanks to Top Marques, it has also found a more prominent stage.

One of the standout examples in the 2022 edition was the legendary James Bond DB5, complete with all its gadgets, listed for sale for more than €3 million. The vehicle, famous for its appearances in the 007 films, became a showstopper, attracting both collectors and fans of the iconic British spy. Such extraordinary pieces are not just valuable in terms of their price tag but are an essential part of the cultural fabric of automotive history.

As Thierry Boutsen, a key partner of the Classic Cars section, remarked, it was important to bring these timeless automobiles into the spotlight for a new generation. Classic cars, with their nostalgia and romance, appeal to car lovers young and old, and Top Marques Monaco was the perfect setting for these cherished vehicles to meet their admirers.

Thierry Boutsen: A Lifelong Passion for Classic Cars

For Thierry Boutsen, cars have been in his blood since birth. Declaring his ambition to be a racing driver at age three, his life revolved around motorsport. After a successful Formula 1 career, Thierry returned to the automotive world with his Boutsen Classic Cars business. In 2022, he became a key partner in launching the Classic Cars section at Top Marques Monaco, marking a new chapter for the event.

Growing up in Brussels, Thierry was drawn to iconic models like the Porsche 911S, Ferrari Dino, and Shelby cars, sparking his passion for classic vehicles. In 2019, a partnership with a Japanese collector allowed him to dive deeper into the market. “Classic cars, especially those before the 1990s, are easy to handle, repair, and have a unique, human touch. They’re crafted with soul, not designed by computers,” Thierry explains.

He contrasts this with today’s cars, which, while technologically advanced, lack the emotional connection of their predecessors. “Cars today are precision-engineered by computers, making them almost too perfect, with very little involvement from designers. Classic cars are about emotion, about feeling the road, hearing the engine roar, and driving something with character.”

In 2018, Thierry opened Boutsen Classic Cars (BCC), and in 2022, alongside his good friend Salim Zeghdar, Thierry took on an exciting new venture—reviving Top Marques Monaco with a focus on classic cars. “The idea came up during one of our discussions about old cars and motorbikes,” Thierry explains. “We wanted to bring classic cars into Top Marques and create a unique space for them.”

“The first year was special because it was something new. Everyone who came had big eyes—they weren’t expecting to see such rare machines,” Thierry recalls. Over the following years, the Classic Cars section grew, attracting more exhibitors and buyers. “It’s all about emotion. People are drawn to the history, the design, and the stories behind these cars. They give you feelings that modern cars just can’t replicate.”

Last year, the success of the Classic Cars section soared. While it’s difficult to quantify exactly how many sales were made, Thierry proudly notes, “We sold a very special scooter at the cocktail evening and another car—both big successes.” But beyond the sales, the event is about bringing together enthusiasts, collectors, and friends who share a deep love for cars. “It’s a networking event, but mainly a gathering of passionate people who truly love cars. The combination of supercars, classic cars, and motorbikes creates a special atmosphere that attracts so many.”

Growth and Evolution of the Classic Car Department

Since its introduction, the Classic Cars section has grown exponentially, reflecting the increasing demand for vintage cars and the enthusiasm surrounding them. In 2024, the event expanded further with over 70 premium vintage vehicles, showcasing models spanning from the 1950s to the 2000s. Among the featured vehicles were rare and sought-after models like the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, McLaren P1, Lamborghini Miura, and even a 1966 Porsche 906. The presence of these masterpieces from car history has attracted a diverse range of visitors, from seasoned collectors to those simply drawn to the sheer elegance of these cars.

In addition to the Classic Car exhibitors, a number of well-known names from the vintage car world have been part of this growth, including Boutsen Classic Cars, DPM Motors, and RM Autosport. These specialists bring a curated selection of automobiles, and it is not uncommon for a rare vehicle to find its new owner on the spot.

The Future of Classic Cars at Top Marques

As we look to the future, the popularity of classic cars shows no signs of slowing down. The allure of vintage automobiles continues to grow as more people appreciate the craftsmanship, engineering, and design that went into these vehicles. While the future of the automobile industry will undoubtedly continue to focus on electric and autonomous vehicles, classic cars represent a different kind of luxury—a luxury that is deeply rooted in history and craftsmanship.

Top Marques Monaco is poised to remain a central hub for the classic car community, with plans to expand even further in the coming years. The event’s organizers recognize that classic cars are more than just a market—they are a celebration of automotive culture, a bond between generations, and a testament to the timeless nature of these vehicles.

As Top Marques grows, there’s no doubt that the classic car section will continue to shine as a beloved cornerstone of the event, cherished by both the seasoned car aficionados and newcomers discovering the magic of vintage automobiles for the first time.

A Day in the Life of Shmee150: Tim Burton’s Journey Behind the Wheel and Camera

Tim Burton, better known as Shmee150, is one of Britain’s most famous automotive content creators, boasting over 8 million followers. In this interview, he takes us behind the scenes to share what a typical day looks like in the life of Shmee.

  1. Can you describe your morning routine?

It’s cliché to say it, but genuinely, no two days are ever the same and that begins with waking up anywhere from 5am to the middle of the day depending on what the previous 24 hours entailed, my travel movements, and the workday ahead. Most mornings begin with a rushed panic to be ready in time for what might be coming, from meetings to filming appointments. Generally, I will plan these to avoid rush hour travel, to prevent additional unnecessary stress being thrown onto the pile of matters to attend to. One downside of being constantly on the move is the inability to keep a pet of sorts, however the perks of waking up in all sorts of exotic locations adds to the excitement of it all.

  1. Could you walk us through a typical workday?

Days vary between one of two options; either filming or focused on other tasks. A film day will generally not allow any time to focus on ‘desk job’ tasks, so it’s a balance of planning enough to meet the requirements of the content schedule, with the balance of leaving time to catch up on everything else. With a team assisting on the fronts of business discussions, editing and content scheduling, it has certainly smoothed out this process, but there are constant challenges to make the optimum plans.

If it’s a day without the camera coming on, that typically breaks down into a split across three topics: meetings and calls, emails, planning future trips or video content. Any future video will require arrangements made to get to where it is taking place, a script to follow for the video piece, and often planning the relevant integrations and links to other products and services. Then there are the days with filming, and those are taken almost entirely by travelling to the location, a full day on the camera, and most normally a very late return thereafter.

  1. How did you get started with your YouTube channel in 2010?

Like many established YouTube creators, the channel’s start was very much without a specific plan. Experimenting video cameras and editing had been a huge part of my teenage years, so naturally that progressed into finding subjects to film, and eventually discovering social media and the means to share content with others. In fact, the first automotive video to appear on my channel was purely a test shoot in preparation for an upcoming ski holiday and therefore checking everything was working correctly with the camera. However, while this wasn’t intended, it quickly became the start of what’s been 5,500+ videos in the 15 years of the channel to date; an average of one or more a day for a decade and a half.

  1. You currently own 16 Shmeemobiles, including a Ferrari Roma Spider and a McLaren 675LT Spider. Where do you store them?

For most of my career as a content creator with a car collection, I have lived in central London and managed cars dotted in various locations. In recent years I first kept the cars in one facility in the surrounding countryside, before eventually moving to a nearby location – balancing the accessibility of the city, with the privacy and ability to more openly create videos that’s offered by departing from the areas of city streets. This is a personal decision as the ultimate move for the business would be further afield to a more remote location offering better value for money and more space to expand.

  1. As someone who’s often in the public eye, how do you unwind and relax after a busy day?

One thing you quickly learn as you move into the public eye is how much that changes more-or-less everything that you do. Conscious that somebody could be listening in to your every word, it means that you become ‘always on’ and must think more carefully – especially not to leak an upcoming plan or business idea. If relaxation and downtime is the priority, ultimately this comes at home; and a holiday suddenly becomes the time spent not travelling.

Having been a keen skier in earlier years, and even an instructor for a couple of seasons, more recently it has been forced to a back seat. However, with a career in automotive having started as a passion first and foremost, time spent in the car and at motoring events is never a bad thing.

  1. How long have you been coming to Top Marques?

My first visit to Top Marques Monaco came in 2011, having seen photos and videos online from previous years and being fascinated by the automotive scene and country itself for many years prior. The event offered a completely unique opportunity to see and hear cars from brands you would rarely find, let alone see on the move. Of course, our annual calendar is loaded to the brim with car events that take place around the world, from attending motorsport races to dedicated launches of new supercars, with events the world over on the radar, there’s constantly something taking place, somewhere. Fast forward many years later and having attended Top Marques Monaco for the majority of years since, there’s always a draw to return and enjoy everything that it offers.

Head to Head : Guido Giovannelli & Stéphane Colmart

As long-standing partners of Top Marques Monaco, the CEOs of two of the Principality’s most renowned car dealerships—Groupe Segond Automobiles and BPM Exclusive—come together to share their unique perspectives on the future of the supercar industry.

GUIDO GIOVANNELLI

First up in our exclusive tête-à-tête is Guido Giovannelli, General Manager of Monaco Luxury and BPM Exclusive, which represents Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, McLaren, Pagani, Pininfarina, Mercedes-Benz, Ineos, Morgan, Maserati, Jaguar, Land Rover, Caterham et Dallara.

  1. Among all the car brands you represent in the Principality, which one are you most attached to and why?

That’s a difficult question! We represent 15 different brands in the Principality, each with their own identity and strengths. But if I had to choose one, it would be Maserati. It’s the latest brand to join our portfolio, and I’m particularly attached to it because I’ve dedicated 25 years of my career to it.

  1. Among the brands you represent, which one best defines the Monegasque lifestyle?

Rolls-Royce. A brand that represents the ultimate luxury tradition, but also remains very modern, especially with its Spectre model, which is fully electric. This brand reflects Monaco—an exclusive city with an incredible history but focused on the future and very attentive to environmental concerns.

  1. If you had to choose a car for a Sunday drive, classic or modern, which one would you choose?

Classique, sans hésitation !

  1. What are your thoughts on the end of sales of combustion engine vehicles by 2035, as a car enthusiast?

I’m not opposed to electric cars, on the contrary. They are very pleasant to drive, especially in the city.

But the idea of seeing combustion engines disappear hurts… A combustion engine is a work of art: a complex system where mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and acoustics have been perfected for over a century.

  1. Monaco is known for its exclusivity and authenticity. Do you think Monaco’s car culture will evolve to include eco-friendly vehicles?

The brands we represent will preserve their DNA while integrating technological advancements. The driving experience will remain in line with our customers’ expectations, even with the growing electrification of the market.

  1. Eco-friendly supercars are still a relatively new concept. Do you think your clients are ready for this change, or do they prefer the traditional sound of an engine?

We already have hybrid sports cars. An iconic brand like Ferrari has been offering electric models for over 10 years. The “La Ferrari” model already combined a V12 engine with an electric system inspired by Formula 1. Today, the idea of a 100% electric supercar still raises some doubts, but the evolution is underway. Even Ferrari is working on its first fully electric model.

  1. What’s been your favorite engine: V8, V10, or V12?

V12 !

  1. Which new car brands do you think you’ll acquire in the coming years?

We’re very satisfied with our current representation and don’t have any new brands in mind for the moment.

That said, we remain open to opportunities.

  1. A bit of fun: You represent the biggest car names in Monaco, but between the two of you, who’s the best driver?

I’ll let Stéphane take the lead on land. But in the air, I’m probably the better one, because my passion is flying planes and helicopters!

  1. And one last question: What do you think of Top Marques; why do you come every year?

In my eyes, it’s the car celebration of Monaco! A time when clients, manufacturers, and enthusiasts gather—it’s a completely unique occasion. The atmosphere is unparalleled: we move from one stand to another, discovering exceptional models… It’s a real pleasure every edition.

STEPHANE COLMART

In the second part of our exclusive tête-à-tête, Stéphane Colmart, CEO of Groupe Segond Automobiles—which represents prestigious brands like Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bugatti, Devinci, Fiat, Jeep, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Suzuki—shares his insights.

  1. Of all the car brands you represent in the Principality, which one are you most attached to and why?

The Segond Automobiles Group is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Currently, we are an authorized distributor and service centre for 10 prestigious car brands in the Principality and the Alpes-Maritimes. Each of them has its charms and strengths, offering vehicles that combine elegance, luxury, sportiness, design, and agility. As you can understand, I can’t limit myself to choosing just one. I love them all!

  1. Among the brands you represent, which one best defines the Monegasque lifestyle?

All the brands we represent today perfectly match the Monegasque lifestyle, without any exceptions. Notably, Bugatti, of course, which made history in 1931 thanks to the victory of Monegasque Louis Chiron at the Monaco Grand Prix. This exceptional French brand, inspiring, combines hyper-luxury, exclusivity, craftsmanship, elegance, authenticity, sportiness, and customization. I suggest you look at the latest Bugatti-Rimac named “Tourbillon” to be completely convinced.

  1. If you had to choose a car for a Sunday drive, classic or modern, which one would you choose?

A beautiful Porsche 911 Cabriolet, whether modern or classic, to drive through the beautiful landscapes of our region in the sunshine.

  1. What are your thoughts on the end of sales of combustion engine vehicles by 2035, as a car enthusiast?

You know that electric and hybrid vehicles from the brands we represent are very pleasant to drive. Even though they no longer produce the same rumble as a thermal engine… We’ll see where the future takes us, but one thing is certain: there will always be thermal vehicles for sale, even if only as beautiful used cars. Also, we can count on manufacturers continuing to develop “cleaner” thermal engines. That’s for sure!

  1. Monaco is known for its exclusivity and authenticity. Do you think Monaco’s car culture will evolve to include eco-friendly vehicles?

It’s already the case. The Principality has been working for several years now to promote ecological vehicles, with the installation of many charging stations in the area, thanks in part to the interesting ecological bonus for the purchase of electric vehicles, for example. In terms of sportiness, you know Monaco hosts the Formula E Grand Prix. Look at the incredible success of small electric vehicles like the Fiat 500 in the Principality; this success truly shows the enthusiasm for ecological vehicles in Monaco.

  1. Eco-friendly supercars are still a relatively new concept. Do you think your clients are ready for this change, or do they prefer the traditional sound of an engine?

The transition to 100% electric supercars is still complex to grasp. However, all manufacturers are now well engaged in designing ecological supercars, particularly with hybridization. Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, to name just a few iconic brands, now offer a wide range of hybrid or electric supercars.

  1. What’s been your favorite engine: V8, V10, or V12?

V12.

  1. Which new car brands do you think you’ll acquire in the coming years?

We already offer a wide range of brands and vehicle types that meet the needs of our clients. We are not in a race for the number of brands represented. It’s clear that if an interesting opportunity arises to complement our range, we will consider it.

  1. A bit of fun: You represent the biggest car names in Monaco, but between the two of you, who’s the best driver?

No idea! But rumors suggest that Guido is a great athlete… I should be able to beat him behind the wheel of a Méhari with “non-assisted” steering, right?

  1. And one last question: What do you think of Top Marques; why do you come every year?

Top Marques is THE event for car enthusiasts in the Principality. It has become a must-attend with great success in terms of both participants and the public. Innovation, prestigious brands, atmosphere, luxury – all gathered around a very professional organization. That’s why we are loyal to this wonderful event.

The Road to Prestige: Top Marques Monaco Marks 20 Years of Iconic Cars and Unmatched Elegance

On an otherwise unexceptional spring day in 2004, the first chapter of an exceptional story was written: the inaugural edition of Top Marques Monaco, proudly presented as ‘The World’s Ultimate Automobile Exhibition’.

In the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, the award-winning Grimaldi Forum, located on Monaco’s most exclusive address, Avenue Princesse Grace, opened its doors on Thursday 22 April to scores of visitors who had come from all corners of the world to see – and even drive – some of the most exotic supercars on the planet.

It was billed to be the world’s ‘most exclusive collection of rare supercars’ for auto lovers who had either ‘come to dream, or come to find the car of your dreams’, according to founder Lawrie Lewis.

Within just 12 hours, thousands of visitors had purchased tickets to see the 44 supercar and luxury brands in the Grimaldi Forum’s Espace Ravel. Meanwhile, nearby, 20 clients found themselves at the local police station as a result of the show’s unique test drive element!

‘See it! Drive it! Buy it!

“The concept of Top Marques was ‘See it! Drive it! Buy it!’, which was an easy sell,” explains Lawrie. “The idea was to get people behind the wheel of a car, to get them to drive around the Formula 1 track, and then they would buy the car.

“Of course, day one was a disaster!” he recalls. “I had gone to the chief of police well before the event to explain what was happening, and to get permission for the test drives. But he didn’t pass the message on to the officers patrolling the streets. So, when they saw these supercars flying past, there were 20 or so that were stopped and taken down to the nearest police station. Luckily, I managed to get them instantly released after talking to the chief of police, who put his hand up as said he hadn’t informed the officers on the street, and it never happened again.”

Despite teething problems on the first day, the inaugural edition held under the high patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco was a huge success, measured, says Lawrie, by the number of exhibitors who signed up there and then for Year Two. “The secret to the success of a show is how quickly it sells for the next one. And we were almost full for year two at the end of the first show!”

Without a doubt, the unique selling point of Top Marques in its early years was the exclusive test drives, which quickly became a favorite among both visitors and exhibitors. Initially held on open roads near the Grimaldi Forum, these exhilarating drives took a significant leap in 2011, when a section of the Formula 1 track on La Route de la Piscine was privatized, offering select time slots for potential buyers.

Test drives remain an integral part of Top Marques today. However, organizers now offer this experience exclusively to clients interested in buying electric cars, following complaints about the noise levels during the height of the test drives.

”Ringo Starr told me this is the greatest show on Earth !” Lawrie Lewis

Given Lawrie’s impressive background in exhibitions, it was no surprise that Top Marques quickly became a success. In 1979, he had made his first foray into exhibitions with Blenheim Exhibitions Group, and by 1986, he had expanded to 40 events. By the time he launched Top Marques in Monaco, he had built a reputation for creating high-end, internationally recognized events.

“My chance to expand really came in 1986 with 30/40 events, when I took the company to the stock market. I built an international team around me, with a head office in London, and offices in Paris, Germany, and Switzerland. We bought a business in America, and at the peak we had more than 100 events, from motor shows, food shows, clothing; we even launched our first event in technology in the late 80s.”

After selling Blenheim Exhibitions Group in 1996, Lawrie used the capital to buy the ITE Group from the Shashua brothers. ITE was another exhibition organisation company which set up events throughout Russia and Eastern Europe. Under his leadership, ITE grew significantly, encompassing events in the Czech Republic, Turkey, Dubai and Egypt.

Crucially, within its portfolio were several international motor events, including the Autosalon Moscow, Russia’s largest motor show held in the Krasnaya Presnya Exhibition Complex.

In 2001, Lawrie moved to Monaco and attempted to retired in 2002 after selling the ITE Group back to the Shashua brothers, fully intending to relax under the blue skies of the Mediterranean. However, when a former colleague mentioned the idea of organizing a live show in Monaco, the allure proved too great to resist.

“I brought in a team of people including a graphic designer; we set up the imagery, put a marketing plan together and to support me financially, I got a wonderful sponsor ‘Citi Group’ who remained with us for the first five years. Prince Albert was also there from the beginning. I had gone up to the Rock to tell Mon Seigneur about my idea for a live supercar show, and really, I was pushing on an open door.”

“An amazing success story”

Lawrie remained at the helm of Top Marques for more than 10 years, during which the event grew exponentially both in terms of surface area, and international reputation. “It was an amazing success story,” he recalls. “The event itself was flawless. It had the most amazing array of metal that anyone could wish for. More to the point, the quality of the sponsor brought in unbelievable quality buyers. It was an event where you have very expensive exhibits – but they all did business. That’s what it’s all about. Trade.”

The show attracted many of Monaco’s personalities, including The Beatles’ legendary drummer, Ringo Starr, who turned out to be a big fan of the event. “‘This is the greatest show on Earth, Lawrie,’ he told me. ‘It’s so selective. I love it here.’ He then headed to the VIP lounge for a beer! It’s all about giving the customer what they want,” Lawrie says. “You have to understand what they want to truly deliver.”

By the time Lawrie stepped back from Top Marques Monaco in 2012, the show had expanded considerably to incorporate dedicated areas in the Grimaldi Forum for hi-end motorbikes, exclusive watches and jewellery, with a selection of superboats displayed outside on the Esplanade. There were also a number of luxury products showcased, from state-of-the-art home entertainment systems to pianos, sculptures and water toys.

By its 10th anniversary, in 2013, the ‘only live supercar show in the world’ had hosted more than 1000 exhibitors, showcased over 1500 supercars, and unveiled 50 world premieres. The event had quickly gained a name for itself as a launch pad for new models, with iconic names such as Koenigsegg, Savage and Mazzanti all choosing Top Marques as the podium for their latest supercars in that first decade.

Transport of Tomorrow

Top Marques had also established itself as a premier event where pioneering companies unveiled groundbreaking transport innovations and cutting-edge alternative fuel solutions. In 2006, the Monegasque company Venturi introduced its Astrolab, the world’s first high-performance solar vehicle available for commercial use. Two years later, in 2008, Fisker Automotive from the United States unveiled its luxury plug-in hybrid sports sedan—the first of its kind.

Meanwhile in 2012, Space Expedition Curacao showcased its SXC_001 on the Esplanade, right in front of Avenue Princesse Charlotte. The SBX_001 was hailed as a precursor to space travel, offering passengers the rare opportunity to experience Earth from space at an altitude of 103 km. Then, in 2015, AeroMobil made history with the debut of the world’s first flying car prototype, returning in 2017 with an updated model.

New chapter under leading destination and events agency, Monaco Check-In

In 2018, Top Marques Monaco entered a new chapter when the management team was taken over by Monaco Check-In, the Principality’s leading destination and events agency. Founded in 1997, Monaco Check-In has a long history of consulting on large-scale events in Monaco, including prestigious occasions such as the Monaco Yacht Show, SPORTEL, Luxe Pack Monaco, and the General Assembly of Interpol.

The company’s expertise extends to organising some of the most high-profile events in Monaco, including H.S.H. Prince Albert’s wedding to H.S.H. Princess Charlene, renowned music and comedy festivals like Sereneissimes de l’Humor, and luxury fashion shows for iconic brands such as Dior and Louis Vuitton.

With this wealth of experience, Monaco Check-In was well-equipped to guide Top Marques Monaco into its next phase. Under the leadership of Salim Zeghdar, the focus shifted to further enhancing the event’s status on the global stage, while remaining true to its core identity as a luxury automotive show.

On the eve of the 16th edition of Top Marques, which had been rescheduled to late May, Mr. Zeghdar shared his vision for the event: ‘When I acquired Top Marques last summer, my goal was to bring the show back to its roots—the supercar and the hypercar. Above all, Top Marques is a luxury marketplace where enthusiasts can discover the latest models and, most importantly, take home the car of their dreams.

Mr Zeghdar more than lived up to his promise to return the show to its roots, and the results speak for themselves. With seven world launches including no less than two from Australia, the first edition under Monaco Check-In broke records in terms of innovation. There were also an unprecedented number of sales made, perhaps due to the new invitation-only VIP event organised by Top Marques, which allowed potential buyers to view the supercars in a privileged atmosphere before the public opening.

Despite the significant challenges posed by COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, the event’s resilience under Mr Zeghdar’s leadership was undeniable. While the world paused, Top Marques Monaco found ways to adapt and stay true to its luxurious brand.

Classic Car Hall added

By 2022, the show was back in full force, introducing a new Classic Car Hall that showcased sports cars from the 1950s to the 1990s. With 11 exhibitors participating in the new section, the event successfully attracted a diverse crowd of car lovers, expanding its reach beyond just supercars to appeal to a wider range of automotive aficionados. Adding Top Marques Monaco merchandise to the mix, as well as securing the hugely popular French auto influencer GMK as an ambassador, further solidified the event’s position as a key player in the luxury automotive and lifestyle sectors.

In 2023, the first-ever auction was held during the event by Top Marques’ partner MonacoCarAuctions, which saw dozens of exclusive Ferraris go under the hammer. Alongside the auction, an Art Competition in partnership with Monaco’s Education Department introduced a forward-thinking element to the event, focusing on the future of car design. These additions proved that the event wasn’t just about showcasing cars but about creating a dynamic and evolving space that celebrates all aspects of the luxury automotive world.

Partner of global events leader Informa Plc

After an exceptionally successful edition in 2024, which saw 13 world premieres and an exclusive appearance of the Tesla Cybertruck—driven to the venue by H.S.H. Prince Albert—Top Marques entered a new phase as it partnered with global events leader Informa Plc, which also organises the Monaco Yacht Show.

What lies ahead is an exciting blank page, but both Mr. Zeghdar and Lawrie are optimistic about the future. “Informa’s vast international network, strong presence in Luxury, Lifestyle, and Technology markets, and expertise in scaling specialist brands make them the ideal partner to elevate Top Marques to new heights,” says Mr. Zeghdar.

“Let’s watch this space,” adds Lawrie. “The supercar is an inherently newsworthy and appealing product, and there’s no reason why Informa can’t take it global. They’re a highly respected organisation with the resources to make it happen. I’m excited to see where the next ten years take us.”

”My goal was to return the show to its DNA – supercars and hypercars.” Salim Zeghdar
