Over the past decade, Côte d’Azur Airports have embraced innovation to minimize the environmental impact of business aviation. As a testament to their efforts, they became the first airport group in France to achieve the prestigious Level 4+ Airport Carbon Accreditation. In 2025, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport reached Level 5 – the highest and most demanding certification – cementing its leadership in decarbonization across the entire value chain.

Groundbreaking Innovations in Ground Operations

The most significant progress in reducing emissions has been achieved during ground operations. A major milestone came in 2016 when Nice Côte d’Azur Airport introduced “pop-out” electric charging stations – an industry-first innovation. These stations were designed with two key objectives:

1. Reducing noise pollution: By eliminating the use of auxiliary engines on parked aircraft along the Promenade des Anglais.

2. Cutting CO2 emissions: By requiring pilots to connect to the electric grid instead of running their engines during flight preparation, significantly improving the carbon footprint of passengers.

The electricity powering these stations is 100% decarbonized and sourced from France. Building on this success, the group has expanded its sustainability efforts to other ground operations. Vehicles used for passenger and baggage transport, aircraft towing, and refueling are now fully electric wherever possible. For operations where electrification isn’t yet feasible due to technical or safety constraints, the group has adopted alternative fuels, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80%.

The Next Frontier: Pioneering Decarbonised Air Travel

While greener ground operations are a critical step, the ultimate challenge lies in reducing emissions during flights. Côte d’Azur Airports have positioned themselves as pioneers in electric aviation. In September 2021, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco became the first head of state to fly in an electric aircraft, the Pipistrel Velis Electro, departing from Nice Airport. This historic moment marked the beginning of the group’s efforts to encourage the adoption of electric aircraft among its users.

Preparing for the Future of Electric Aviation

Anticipating the rise of electric aviation, the group is currently studying the feasibility of installing an agrivoltaic solar farm capable of producing up to eight times the electricity required for future electric aircraft at the Golfe de Saint-Tropez Airport. The airport’s recently renovated runways have been designed to accommodate the infrastructure needed to power next-generation aircraft.

Looking ahead, Côte d’Azur Airports are also preparing for the arrival of vertical take-off and landing electric aircraft (eVTOLs). These innovative aircraft are perfectly suited to the Côte d’Azur region, offering seamless connections for business travelers to their final destinations via Nice, Cannes, and Golfe de Saint-Tropez airports.
